 Il territorio è attraversato longitudinalmente dalla superstrada E45 e dalla Ferrovia Centrale Umbra, che collega Umbertide a nord con Città di Castello e San Sepolcro, a sud con Perugia e Terni. Le origini della città sono oscure ed è tutt'oggi difficoltoso stabilire l'etimologia dei suoi nomi, prima "Pitulum" poi "Fracta", che troviamo per la prima volta nel XII secolo. Col nome di "Pitulum" si dice fondata dai Romani o dai Cartaginesi nel 217 a.C., dopo la battaglia del Trasimeno. Distrutta dai Goti, Pitulum sarebbe stata ricostruita nell'VIII secolo col nome di "Fracta". Si sa che "Fratta dei figlioli d'Uberto" nel 1189 fu sottoposta alla giurisdizione di Perugia e che più volte, nel volgere dei secoli, subì distruzioni e saccheggi. Fu sotto il dominio pontificio fino al 1860 e governata con istituzioni e magistrature simili a quelle di Perugia, di cui fu avamposto verso nord. Nel 1863, dopo la proclamazione dell'Unità d'Italia, il Consiglio comunale, con voto unanime, approvò di dare alla città il nome di "Umbertide". Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, il 25 aprile 1944, un violento bombardamento aereo colpì nel cuore Umbertide, causando morte e distruzione. Dall'ansia di rinnovamento, dopo gli anni '60, hanno tratto impulso nuove iniziative urbanistiche e industriali, che danno alla Città un volto nuovo ed accogliente. Le colline che circondano Umbertide, coi castelli e le chiese, offrono al turista ed allo studioso la possibilità di effettuare gite ed escursioni interessanti.
(The area of Umbertide is crossed length-wise by the E45 highway and the “Ferrovia Centrale Umbra” railway that links Umbertide to the north with Città di Castello and San Sepolcro and to the south with Perugia and Terni. The origins of the town are mysterious and it is still difficult today to define the etymology of its names: formerly "Pitulum" and later "Fracta" found for the first time in the XII century. It is said that "Pitulum" was founded by the ancient Romans or by the Carthaginians in 217 B.C. after the battle of Trasimeno. Pitulum was destroyed by the Goths and was rebuilt in the VIII century with the name of "Fracta". We know that in 1189, "Fratta dei figlioli d’Uberto" was placed under the jurisdiction of Perugia and over the centuries was destroyed and pillaged many times. It was placed under papal power until 1860 and ruled by institutions and magistracy similar to those in Perugia; becoming its northern-most outpost. In 1863, after the proclamation of the Unification of Italy, the town council unanimously approved the town name of "Umbertide". During World War II (25 April 1944), a violent air raid over the centre of the town caused death and destruction. After the excitement of the renovation period at the end of the 60’s, new urban and industrial initiatives started – this led to the creation of a modern and welcoming town. The hills surrounding Umbertide with their castles and churches offer tourists and experts the possibility of undertaking interesting tours of this area.)
